I rebooted my router and busted Reddit’s favorite tech myth

Many PC users swear by the simple fix of rebooting a glitchy device. But does that rule apply to your home router? A recent experiment set out to test the popular belief—often debated on Reddit—that power cycling your router improves internet speed.

The author ran multiple speed tests before and after rebooting the router and ISP gateway. Using Bing's built-in speed test (powered by Ookla), seven sequential tests were conducted in the early afternoon. After unplugging both devices for 30 seconds and restarting, the tests were repeated. The results showed no statistically significant difference in throughput. While some individual readings were higher after the reboot, the variability in results actually increased, meaning the perceived boost was likely due to random fluctuation rather than the restart itself. Even a later test in the evening, during peak usage hours, showed similar inconsistent highs and lows.

Why Do People Think Rebooting Helps?

The myth may have originated with older routers that had limited memory and could become bogged down by many connected devices. In modern mesh networks, this is rarely an issue. The author noted that after moving to a mesh system, complaints from family members dropped significantly—without any routine reboots.

What the Router Makers Say

Officials from two major router manufacturers weighed in. A product marketing manager at MSI stated that their routers are built on a mature firmware architecture designed for long-term stability, so periodic reboots are unnecessary. Netgear's senior vice president of home networking agreed, adding that while rebooting can fix occasional hiccups, it should not be a regular practice. Both emphasized that keeping firmware updated—via automatic updates—is far more important for security and performance.

When Slow Internet Persists

If your connection remains sluggish despite a well-maintained router, the next step is to contact your ISP. Support technicians can run remote diagnostics to identify issues like neighborhood congestion, faulty cabling, or aging equipment. An on-site visit may be warranted.

In conclusion, the myth of the beneficial router reboot is busted, at least for modern devices. The real secrets to better throughput are upgrading your internet plan, investing in a newer router, and ensuring firmware is current. Rebooting alone won't solve your problems—no matter what Reddit says.
