Apple now requires verification for Education Store, adds Apple Watch with discounts

By Twila Rosenbaum | 10 May 2026

Apple is rolling out verification requirements for its Education Store in the United States and several other countries, ending the honor system. The company has also added Apple Watch models to the Education Store with discounts, including Series 11, SE, and Ultra 3. The changes aim to tighten access to educational pricing and come alongside the launch of the affordable MacBook Neo.

Apple is introducing two significant changes to its Education Store in the United States and other markets. Starting today, the company now requires verification for all purchases made through the Education Store in the US, replacing the previous honor system. Additionally, Apple Watch models are now available with educational discounts for the first time.

Verification Now Mandatory

Beginning today, shoppers in the United States must complete a verification process when purchasing through the Education Store. This change also applies to Australia, Hong Kong, Turkey, Canada, and Chile. In many other regions, such as the UK, Apple already required verification.

Eligible customers include current and newly accepted college students, their parents, faculty, staff, and homeschool teachers across all grade levels. Apple has partnered with UNiDAYS to handle the verification. Students and educators must create a UNiDAYS ID and verify their academic status by logging into their school’s academic portal or uploading a photo of their student or faculty ID. Homeschool teachers need to provide an identity document (e.g., driver's license, state ID, or passport) and a homeschool document such as a Letter of Intent (LOI) or Letter of Acknowledgment.

Most customers will be verified instantly, while those requiring manual verification should receive a response within 24 hours. The same process applies both in-store and online.

Purchase limits remain unchanged: one desktop, one Mac mini, one notebook, two iPads, and two accessories with Education Pricing per year.

Apple Watch Joins the Education Store

For the first time, Apple Watch is available with discounts through the Education Store. This includes the Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch SE, and Apple Watch Ultra 3. The watches are offered in a wide range of markets: Australia, China (via AliPay), Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, France, Germany, India, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Turkey, UK, US, Canada, and Chile.

In the United States, Education Store pricing for Apple Watch is as follows:

  • Apple Watch Series 11: from $359 (regular $399) – Amazon price from $299
  • Apple Watch Ultra 3: from $719 (regular $799) – Amazon price from $779
  • Apple Watch SE 3: from $229 (regular $249) – Amazon price from $219

Context and Analysis

This is Apple's second attempt to require verification for the Education Store in the United States. In January 2022, the company rolled out a similar verification system with UNiDAYS but reversed the decision just two days later. The earlier attempt faced issues, particularly for homeschool teachers.

Apple has not provided an official explanation for reintroducing verification now. However, the recent launch of the MacBook Neo at a starting price of $599 (or $499 for education shoppers) may be a contributing factor. The extremely low price point likely increased the potential for abuse, making verification necessary to ensure discounts reach eligible individuals.

The current implementation appears to have addressed previous problems with UNiDAYS, especially for homeschool teachers. The process is designed to be quick and streamlined, with most verifications happening instantly.

These changes mark a shift in Apple's approach to educational pricing. Previously, the honor system in the US allowed anyone to access discounts, which was a generous but easily exploited policy. The new verification requirements aim to protect the integrity of the program while still providing significant savings to students and educators.

With the addition of Apple Watch to the Education Store, Apple continues to expand its product offerings for the education community. The discounts are competitive, though in some cases, third-party retailers like Amazon may offer better deals. Customers are advised to compare prices before making a purchase.

Overall, these updates represent a tightening of access to educational pricing while also broadening the range of discounted products. As Apple continues to release new devices, the Education Store remains a valuable resource for students and educators worldwide.
