Five Apple Wallet features that helped replace my physical wallet [Video]

For years, the Apple Wallet app has been one of Apple’s most underrated services. While many associate it solely with Apple Pay, the app now stores credit cards, transit passes, digital keys, and enables peer-to-peer payments. Over time, these features have quietly accumulated, allowing many users to leave their physical wallet and keys at home. Below are five key features that make this possible.

Apple Cash and iMessage Payment

Most people don’t realize they can obtain a free digital Apple Cash card simply by having an Apple ID. This is essentially a debit card that can be loaded with funds from a bank account and used via Apple Pay anywhere that accepts contactless payments. It also enables instant peer-to-peer payments directly through iMessage. For many, this replaces apps like Venmo, Cash App, and Zelle. The Apple Cash card is FDIC-insured, offering peace of mind. The only limitation is that it cannot be used to withdraw cash from an ATM, but for everyday transactions, it functions exactly like a digital debit card.

Tap to Cash

Tap to Cash leverages the Apple Cash card to allow direct payments between iPhones without any additional hardware or payment terminals. The process is simple: open the Wallet app, select the Apple Cash card, tap Send or Request, then Tap to Cash, choose an amount, double‑tap the side button, and hold the top of your iPhone near the recipient’s iPhone. The money transfers instantly with no fees. This feature eliminates the need for third‑party payment services and works seamlessly, with a satisfying animation during the transfer.

Express Transit Cards

Express Transit mode is a convenience feature for public transport. Instead of manually authenticating with Face ID or a passcode each time you tap your phone on a transit terminal, you can designate a specific card to be used automatically. To set it up, go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay, scroll to Express Transit Card, and select the card you want. From then on, simply tapping your iPhone on the terminal instantly registers payment, speeding up commutes and reducing friction.

Physical Credit Card Info in Apple Wallet

Previously, Apple Wallet only stored the virtual card number used for Apple Pay transactions. If you needed the actual credit card number for online purchases or manual entry, you had to fetch the physical card. Now, you can securely save the full credit card details behind Face ID. In the Wallet app, tap a saved card, tap the three dots in the top right, and add or view the physical card information. This means you can leave the physical card at home and still have access to the card number when Apple Pay isn’t accepted.

Digital Car and Home Keys

Apple Wallet now supports digital keys for cars and homes that work with compatible smart locks and vehicles. For instance, a smart lock that supports HomeKit can be opened by simply tapping your iPhone to the door handle. Similarly, supported cars can be locked and unlocked without a key fob. Many systems also offer proximity‑based auto‑lock and auto‑unlock, making entry and exit seamless. Combined, these features mean you can leave the house with just your iPhone, no keys required.

Apple Wallet continues to grow in scope, integrating boarding passes, event tickets, loyalty cards, and more. As the ecosystem expands, the need for a physical wallet diminishes further. The convenience and security offered by these five features demonstrate how Apple has transformed a simple app into an essential everyday tool.
